Drawing Canyon, Sage, and Sky NM Badlands Residency
A Truly Unique South Carolina to New Mexico "Field Trip" with Sara Schneckloth
Acclaimed visual artist and University of South Carolina Professor Sara Schneckloth leads an inspiring drawing residency which takes place in New Mexico’s high desert landscapes. The exceptional environment features piñon and juniper forests together with dramatic geological formations and expansive cloudscapes and breathtaking night skies. Artists will find inspiration in Agnes Martin's artistic heritage as they create portable studios located in sagebrush fields and the striking badlands. Participants will deeply experience both creative process and natural surroundings by making their own earth pigments and natural paints while receiving individual tutorials and reflective studio time.
The program offers two separate residential workshops during 2025. The "Cañon del Rio Immersive Drawing Retreat" takes place from May 22nd to May 28th in Jemez Springs and allows artists to enhance their skills through meditative experimentation and direct natural landscape interaction. The session focuses on individualized mentorship while encouraging students to explore their creativity in solo environments. The "Badlands Drawing Research Workshop" (May 30-June 5) in Cuba, NM, welcomes artists and educators and scholars to study drawing as research through field exploration and experimental methods and interdisciplinary dialogue in the rugged badlands landscape. The program includes full tuition along with accommodation and dining and art materials and transportation services and students must submit applications by March 1st each year.
